'THE FAIRGROUND', Bali (short film)

'THE FAIRGROUND', Bali (short film)

One night, whilst driving back from Sidemen to Ubud in Bali on my scooter, I came across a fair. It had been a particularly difficult day for me psychologically, mourning the loss of two people who meant the most to me. Perhaps in response to that I was drawn towards the fair, a place that reminded me of simpler times. During my period of grief over the last year I found myself watching Disney and Pixar movies every night, almost as if the bright colours and the familiar characters would act like a portal and transport me back to childhood innocence. This fair was a similar portal and I found myself wondering around it for hours lost in the simple joy of the kids and families. I attempted to preserve the moments I saw in the images I captured with my camera. Later on the night I came across a scene in stark contrast and contradiction to what I'd seen earlier, this mirrored the inner conflict I've felt trying to recover joy, innocence and obliviousness whilst a darker undercurrent continues to surge. The result is 'The Fairground', a piece of music and short film that embody where I'm at right now. This is for those who have lost the ones they loved. Words - Have you ever seen an angel die? Death is different when they’re deified, Two bodies fell from bleeding skies, Wearing faces that I recognised. Gravity left first, Then time followed, Which is probably for the best since I can’t face tomorrow, How do I wake up, When everything has changed? And I know that it will never be the same again. I’ll go back to the fairground, I’ll go back to the fairground.

A NIGHT WITH THE "LADYBOYS" OF THAILAND| Koh Tao Experience

A Night with the "Ladyboys" of Thailand | Koh Tao Experience | BMPCC6K

What an unexpected evening this was! The passion, talent, and beauty of the performers at The Queen Cabaret in Koh Tao, Thailand, is incredible. The tearful expression of the girl at the end truly captures the emotions in the room. It’s hard to believe they perform this mesmerising "ladyboy" show every night with such intensity. I was genuinely blown away. I’m so glad I had my camera to capture these powerful moments, showing a different side to Thailand's nightlife and the raw beauty of the girls in the show. I've used Sigur Ros, Varúð to soundtrack. Enjoy the cinematic journey! Subscribe for new cinematic travel stories every Monday.serendipitously, and after a few passing "hellos," I asked if I could film him, sharing his heartfelt rendition with the world. I loved the contrast of a musician in Bali singing a very English song and it really summed up the vibe of Canggu. Shot on a Blackmagic 6K camera using a vintage Helios 44-2 lens and Penacon 135mm lens, this video brings you up close to the unique ambiance of Canggu’s beaches. Through cinematic visuals and soulful music, I aim to capture the beauty in everyday moments, where music, nature, and community come together. The Bali Rasta | Sunset Surf Song - Oasis 'Stand By Me' Cover in Canggu (Black Magic 6k - Helios)

Experience the vibrant soul of Canggu, Bali, in this cinematic 4K sunset video featuring a special moment with Ringo, a Balinese musician, performing Oasis's "Stand By Me" acoustically on the streets. This film captures the essence of Bali’s coastline at dusk, with surfers riding the waves, children playing by the shore, and golden sunlight drenching the horizon. I met Ringo serendipitously, and after a few passing "hellos," I asked if I could film him, sharing his heartfelt rendition with the world. PEOPLE WATCHING WITH AN OVERACTIVE IMAGINATION - Porto, Portugal

PEOPLE WATCHING WITH AN OVERACTIVE IMAGINATION | Porto, Portugal Cinematic Travel Film

Do you ever find yourself watching people pass by, wondering what their stories might be? I do, and I take it a step further by crafting little plots and scenarios in my head about their lives. It’s something I call "People Watching with an Overactive Imagination"—a quirky habit that turns ordinary moments into cinematic scenes. This short film is a glimpse into that side of my mind, set against the stunning backdrop of Porto, Portugal.

As I wandered through Porto, from its bustling streets to its serene beaches, I couldn't help but imagine what adventures strangers might be on. Where are they heading? What experiences are they carrying? This film captures that thought process and offers a visual representation of how I see the world—where even a simple stroll can turn into a journey of storytelling.

Why People Watching Inspires Creativity

People watching is more than just an idle pastime for me; it’s a source of endless inspiration. There’s a beauty in observing everyday life and allowing your mind to run wild with possibilities. Strangers, with their unknown backgrounds and destinations, become characters in the little stories I create. They may be heading to an important meeting, or maybe they’re in the middle of a life-changing journey.

This act of watching and imagining brings a sense of connection to the world around me. It allows me to transform the mundane into something magical, where life is constantly full of stories waiting to be discovered. Porto, with its rich history and vibrant energy, provided the perfect setting for this video—a place where every corner seemed to hold a new narrative.

The Beauty of Porto: A Perfect Backdrop for Imagination

Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a city full of contrasts—lively streets blend into quiet alleys, and old-world architecture stands beside modern life. From its colorful buildings to the picturesque views of the Douro River, Porto is a city that feels like it’s straight out of a film. The combination of Porto’s rich cultural history and its breathtaking scenery made it the ideal backdrop for this project.

Whether walking through the Ribeira District or capturing the serene beauty of Foz do Douro Beach, Porto offered a variety of visuals that enhanced the film’s storytelling element. The streets were filled with interesting characters—tourists, locals, and vendors—that sparked my imagination at every turn. The city's historic bridges, ornate churches, and sunlit coastlines became characters in the narrative, each playing their role in creating a cinematic moment.

How Vintage Lenses Add Character to Travel Films

For this film, I used a Blackmagic 6K camera, paired with vintage lenses like the Helios 44-2 and Pentacon 135mm. These lenses bring a unique texture and aesthetic to the footage, offering a soft, nostalgic quality. The Helios 44-2 lens is known for its signature swirly bokeh, which adds an artistic flair to any shot. The Pentacon 135mm provides stunning sharpness, balanced by a soft, cinematic feel that perfectly complements the architecture and street life of Porto.

Why vintage lenses? Modern lenses are incredible for sharpness and precision, but they often lack the imperfections and character that older lenses provide. The slight blur, the way light flares or distorts, and the overall softness create a more dream-like quality. In a city like Porto, where history and modernity blend seamlessly, using vintage lenses helps evoke a sense of timelessness and nostalgia that suits the visual narrative.

The Role of Imagination in Cinematic Travel

At its heart, travel filmmaking is about more than capturing beautiful scenery—it’s about telling stories. Every city, every stranger, and every moment has a story to tell if you let your imagination wander. With “Your Life is Cinema,” I aim to showcase how everyday moments, even the ones that seem ordinary, can become extraordinary when viewed through a creative lens.

Imagination plays a central role in this process. By creating narratives around the people and places I encounter, I can transform simple moments into meaningful experiences. The streets of Porto are not just streets—they’re settings for potential stories. The people walking by aren’t just strangers—they’re characters with hidden lives and adventures. This blend of reality and imagination is what drives my passion for filmmaking, and I hope it resonates with you too.

FOOTBALL OR RELIGION? Spain Euro win 2024 | Euphoric fans | Koh Tao, Thailand

Football or Religion? Spain Euro win 2024 | Euphoric fans | Koh Tao, Thailand (Black Magic 6k)

Experience Spain's thrilling EURO 2024 victory over England through the raw emotions of fans in stunning 4K, set in the tropical backdrop of Koh Tao, Thailand.

This cinematic video captures the passionate highs and heartbreaking lows of football, juxtaposed with the serene Buddhist chants of Thai monks.

Blending the intensity of the match with the spiritual tranquility of Thailand, this video explores the deeper connection between sport and religion—where community, faith, and passion intersect.

Shot on my Blackmagic 6K camera with a vintage Nikon 50mm lens, every moment is brought to life with vivid detail and artistry.

As the crowd erupts with joy and sorrow, the chants echo, reminding us of philosopher Simon Critchley’s observation: “Football is more than a game—it’s a way of finding significance and even transcendence in the everyday.” Much like religion, football creates a shared sense of belonging, with fans acting as disciples and players as modern-day idols. Drawing on the ideas of Émile Durkheim and Albert Camus, this video reflects how football, like religion, unites communities, stirs collective emotions, and teaches us about loyalty, hope, and resilience.

Whether you’re a fan of Spain’s national team, a lover of cinematic travel videos, or intrigued by the connection between football and spirituality, this video provides a unique perspective on the universal power of sport. At Your Life Is Cinema, I aim to show that every moment, even in the heat of competition or the calm of spiritual reflection, holds the potential for a deeper story.
